Steven Mohnssen, M.D

Dr. Mohnssen began his post high school education at the Air Force Academy where he competed on the intercollegiate Track and Cross – Country teams, flew gliders and in general tried to stay out of trouble.  Since he was informed that his eyes weren’t good enough to fly jets, he finished the remainder of his undergraduate education at IndianaUniversity, Bloomington, Indiana. He then completed medical school and received his M.D. degree from IndianaUniversityMedicalCenter, Indianapolis, where he subsequently completed his Internal Medicine Residency as well.  After serving for a year as a lecturer on the Internal Medicine faculty at IndianaUniversity, he completed his advanced Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at Harbor – UCLAMedicalCenter in Torrance, California.

His first practice was a solo practice in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine in Indiana, followed later by a group practice.  He joined Pulmonary Associates Colorado Springs in 2001 and is honored to work with an excellent staff and superb highly skilled physician partners.

Dr. Mohnssen is board certified in Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine.  He is a fellow in the AmericanCollege of Chest Physicians.  As an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, he enjoyed the challenge of teaching pulmonary medicine to medical students while maintaining a private practice. He also has served as the medical director and program director of various hospital respiratory departments and critical care units while also starting three hospital and community based pulmonary rehabilitation programs and a new hospital based sleep lab in Indiana.

With regard to Sleep Medicine, he participates on the sleep study reading panel at Memorial/UCH, where he also maintains a sleep medicine clinic, and has also served as the medical director of the HealthSouthSleepCenter in Colorado Springs for 13 years. Dr. Mohnssen currently serves as the medical director of Delta Waves sleep lab in Colorado Springs.

Although Dr. Mohnssen has written multiple scientific articles, he has also written the following publications for patients: The Intensive Care Unit: What Every Family Needs to Know, Robert D. Reed publishers, 2001, and The Insomnia Therapy Manual, 2006. Dr. Mohnssen was awarded a hospital foundation grant to educate people in Indiana about the dangers of sleep deprivation, and also was listed in Top Doctors in Colorado Springs in the Colorado Springs Style magazine.

Born and raised Indiana, Dr. Mohnssen appreciates his midwestern roots, but loves the beauty of Colorado.  He feels blessed to be able to work in the challenging fields of Pulmonary/Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and finds it extremely gratifying to diagnose and treat patients with complex problems, following them over the years.  And yet, he does have a life outside of medicine. Although he loves to run, his knees will no longer allow this passion, so instead, he maintains his fitness in other ways, but golf is not his strong suit.  Along with travel and fine wine, his other passion is writing. He is a fiction novelist and also writes non – fiction inspirational stories, all under a pen name, usually during airplane flights, on restaurant napkins or in French cafés.
